The man who changed the face of contemporary art with a can of spray paint, Banksy’s impact on the worldwide political and artistic landscape is undeniable and boundless.
Starting out in his native Bristol, his introduction of the use of stencils, inimitable originality and daring allowed him to quickly rise through the ranks, bringing many of his fellow street artists with him. He began painting from age 14, he was expelled from school and even spent time in prison for petty crimes.
He redefined what it is to be a street artist, and through his work with Pictures on Walls and Lazarides, opened up a new world of limited street art editions. To summarise Banksy’s achievements and artistic career in such a short space is futile, but this Oscar-nominated, game changing artist who has somehow managed to retain anonymity alongside international stardom has carved a new path for street art and street artists that will be there for years to come.
